With the explosion and following spillover of the Dnipro dam at Nova Kakhovka a humanitarian disaster threatens several towns, villages and Kherson city itself. Local government officials claim that 16 thousand people are affected by the resulting flooding. Evacuation has begun and HIA humanitarians are distributing 350 emergency aid kits to those fleeing rising water levels in Kherson, Tyahynka, L’vove, Olhivka settlements, while continuing to monitor events as they unfold. Utilities (electricity, gas and water) are cut off, thus locals are making use of the more than 60 electric generators handed over by HIA since November.

László Lehel, president-director of Hungarian Interchurch Aid is currently in the region after delivering 5 tons of aid in Mykolaiv and conducting high-level talks with local leaders. These discussions confirmed the need for continued cooperation, a need that is reinforced by the humanitarian disaster caused by the flooding.

HIA has been one of the first organisations to assist citizens of Kherson and its surroundings following their liberation, and continues to help local people in times of great need. In its efforts to bring relief to the region, HIA is supported by ACT Alliance and the Ukraine Humanitarian Fund.
