Supporting farmers and rehabilitation of agriculture in the Ninewa Plateau

By setting up a demonstration farm in the Alqosh settlement of Ninewa Governorate, Iraq, HIA is establishing an agricultural training centre which will provide training on regenerative agricultural methods (permaculture) to at least 50 Iraqi agricultural beneficiaries with the help of expert advisors. The model farm aims to provide a long-term source of income for community members and the advanced production techniques and subsequent processing industry that will be established there will reach a significantly larger group of beneficiaries. The training addresses the deep–rooted, persistent problems – such as water scarcity, desertification, land depletion and lack of jobs – that lead to the continuing out–migration from the area. After theoretical and practical training, farmers participating in the programme will be able to choose from 6 packages of permaculture tools offered, which will also help their families‘ and communities‘ climate resilience and livelihoods. The two-phase programme aims to reach a total of 456 beneficiaries.
