HIA’s first project in Ethiopia started in response to the 2011 East Africa Draught. Our projects focused on supporting the poorest population groups by providing education, adequate food and water supply. HIA has provided a school with equipment, implemented a water management program involving 250 people, rehabilitated wells, and did the construction of a 13 000 m3 reservoir in the frame of a drought risk reduction program.
In 2021 Ethiopia is facing one of its biggest humanitarian crisis. HIA decided to re-establish its aid program in the country to provide help to those in need. With the support of the Hungary Helps Program, we are focusing on livelihood enhancement by promoting sustainable agriculture and education in the Gambella Region of Ethiopia. As part of our education component we have built a four-classroom primary school and distributed school materials in the targeted communities. Within the agriculture and livelihood element we distributed seeds, provided farming tools and vegetable seeds to women, established fishing youth groups and provided them with fishing nets.
